Sportsbook Payouts
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have many sportsbook accounts and have been trying to withdrawal money from most of them over the last few weeks since football is my primary sport that I like to wager on. It has been one of the most frustrating experiences due primarily to delays in receiving my money. I realize many people will be requesting withdrawals after the Superbowl so I thought I would share some thoughts on things I have learned in case this helps anyone. These are just my thoughts. I have no inside information on how things really work because I have never worked at a sportsbook but I hope this information might be useful to someone.
• It appears that most sportsbooks do use 3rd party check processors that are responsible for issuing the checks and sending them out. The customer service people that answer the sportsbook’s phones may have no idea whether the check was actually printed and mailed. The clerk may tell me the check was mailed when all they know is the payout request was approved by the sportsbook and was sent on to the 3rd party check processor to print the check and mail it out.• I have found it much harder to get accurate information regarding the status of my payouts from some of the bigger sportsbooks (BoDog, CRIS family of books, Matchbook) than the smaller sportsbooks. I realize these bigger sportsbooks have more customers and more payout requests but it would seem like they could have better communication with their 3rd party check processor so they could give more accurate information. Many of these books have told me the check is in the mail and you will have it tomorrow but the check doesn’t come. I also notice that I can get completely different stories from different customer service people at the same book. I called DSI a few days ago and was told it would be 10 days before they could even process a check payout but when I called back a few minutes later and talked to someone else they said it was only about 3 days delay.• I have learned that it seems like a waste of time to try to call these bigger sportsbooks when my check is slow to arrive. I ask to talk with management and they will spend time trying to explain things but they still can’t give me definite honest answers about when my checks will actually be mailed. I believe this is because the delays at some of these bigger books are indeed due to the 3rd party check processor having a bunch of checks to process and the sportsbook doesn’t really know what is going on with their 3rd party processor.• I have learned that my actions in dealing with the smaller sportsbooks can help to speed up my check that is slow to arrive. I believe this may be because the management at the smaller books may reviewing the payout requests and deciding which ones to approve immediately and which ones to wait a little while to approve and send on to their check processor. Or maybe the management has decided to take 5 days before reviewing payout requests because their 3rd party check processor is overloaded. One of my payouts was late at a smaller sportsbook that I had lost a lot of money with. So I called and talked with the manager and explained how I have been a loyal customer and have lost a lot of money but expect that when I finally have some winnings that I could get my money. He apologized and I received a Fedex tracking number the next day.• If I think the customer service person I am talking to doesn’t know much, it sometimes helps to just call back a few minutes later and talk with someone else. I couldn’t get decent information at one sportsbook so I called back and the girl did a great job explaining their payout process. She explained how the computer had a code for each payout. She said each payout would either have a code that means either (1) “waiting manager approval” where the sportsbook manager must approve the payout or (2) “Funds withdrawn” when they take the amount out of the account and send the request to the 3rd party processor or (3) “Paid Status” which means the check was mailed. She said the computer shows my payout just went to the paid status code today so it was Fedexed and I should have the money tomorrow. I did receive the check the next day.• I have always gotten frustrated when a sportsbook tells me the check was mailed by Fedex but we don’t have a tracking number. We all know that as soon as Fedex receives a package and scans it into their system that we can check the status online. However, I am not sure the customer service people at the sportsbooks understand this and it is entirely possible that their 3rd party check processor who gives the checks to Fedex may not inform the sportsbook of all the tracking numbers until the next day. Or the sportsbook may do a poor job of communicating with their own customer service people regarding the Fedex tracking numbers they received from their 3rd party check processors. Again, I believe the sportsbooks should spend more time trying to get accurate information from their 3rd party processors on the status of paid and pending withdrawals. But I have realized it doesn’t do much good to try to explain to the customer service person how tracking numbers should be available if it was mailed because they might not have access to them anyway.• Some sportsbook customer service people tell me it takes 4 days for Fedex to deliver a check because it is an international shipment. However, I have entered my tracking numbers on the Fedex websites and checked the delivery timeline for many checks that I have received from sportsbooks. The majority of checks arrive the next day after the check is given to Fedex while some take two days. So it is simply not true that international Fedex shipments take four days to receive. I realize that this doesn’t mean I should expect a check the next day after a request because they still must issue the check, but it does not seem unreasonable to expect to receive a check within three days of my request. Many top books deliver in two days or less.• One other thing I don’t like is when the sportsbook does not deduct my withdrawal amount immediately. I may just be requesting a partial payout and then I have to remember how much my withdrawal was if I want to place a wager later that day because the book will obviously cancel the withdrawal if I put more in action than would be left after the payout. I think computer systems like the one Gameday uses are the best. It shows the withdrawal amount immediately when I request an online payout as a pending withdrawal so I know they received my withdrawal request. But it also has the advantage of letting me know when it is paid because the pending withdrawal will disappear. I would always suggest that you check your account balance the day after a payout request, especially if you requested it online, just to be sure the amount was deducted and you know they received the payout. Some sportsbooks do not deduct a payout until the money is actually sent so I have to call them or e-mail them to confirm they received my payout request and it is at least being processed.• One other suggestion would be “Don’t request the exact same amount from two different sportsbooks”. I received a check in the mail and wasn’t sure which sportsbook had sent it because I had requested the same amount from two sportsbooks.
So my primary suggestion when trying to find out about the real status of a payout would be to ask the customer service person to explain the payout process. Ask about the codes that get entered in their computer system that relate to payouts. If you are lucky enough to get an informed customer service person, she may be able to tell you the specific step of the process that your withdrawal is based on a code in her computer system. If she tells you that it is waiting management approval and it has been a few days since the request, then you might want to think about your history with the sportsbook (have you lost money, do you inform them of bad lines, have you referred friends, etc). Then you may want to contact a manager and explain the reason why your payout should be approved immediately.
From my perspective, the overwhelming majority of sportsbook are indeed paying but you will likely notice longer payout timelines than you may have experienced in the past at many sportsbooks.
I would like to hear any other ideas on ways to receive payouts sooner. What have you done that seemed to work when your payout was delayed? What have you done that did not work? Who are the key management people at the various sportsbooks that are willing to talk with the customers and can actually make something happen if you need help getting a payout? What actions do you typically take when a payout is delayed? I typically prefer to talk with the sportsbook and try to find out what is going on and give them a chance to make things right before I would make any threats and get too upset. Although I realize it may be less time consuming to take an aggressive and confrontational approach right from the start.
